Prestonhill Quarry Fire

CW: animal remains

It was a week after the fire that I found myself wandering along the charred outlines of the area that caught ablaze.
Whether accidentally or on purpose (though likely without full realisation of the consequences) the fire was started by some of the many teenagers that use the quarry for parties throughout summer. After one of the hottest weeks on record the area was parched, unsurprisingly the grass lit up like a tinderbox, engulfing the surrounding trees and making its way rapidly towards the town.

Thankfully, no human lives were lost. However, standing in the midst of the aftermath, I realised I was within a snail graveyard of epic proportions. And then I started to notice the frogs and toads as well. As grim as it is, I decided to honour each one in the only way I could - through individual portraits of each creature, capturing their final moments of life.
