Sea Turtles & Land Lizards
A Day Trip to FItzroy Island
We ended up stumbling on to our boat, only 75% sure we were in the right place and completely out of breath. As I sat, trying to regain some sense of calm, I saw a helicopter a short distance away, flying low to the surface of the water. Someone told me it meant there was a great white shark too close to shore and that they were trying to herd it back out into open water.
I tried as hard as I could to not think about that when we got to the island and went snorkelling in the murky, storm churned water, but then I realised I was swimming above a turtle and none of that mattered anymore. We went on a walk around the island and found more birds and lizards and insects than I could count, it was heaven. At the end of the day we sauntered back onto the boat, not a hint of tension in our sun prickled skin and sailed off, towards a soft orange sky.
